Dunedin Swim Team are a competitive club and, as such, we enter competitions which are known as galas or meets.

In Scotland, these competitions are governed by SASA which is the Scottish Amateur Swimming Association. Scottish swimmers have to be registered on an annual basis and are allocated a SASA number. SASA members may also compete outside of Scotland in countries ruled by other bodies, e.g. England is governed by Amateur Swimming Association (ASA).

In the main, galas have a qualifying time which must have previously been attained. The organisers then sort all the entries and usually take the fastest swimmers. As this excludes the slower inexperienced swimmers, there are galas specifically aimed at these swimmers and are known as graded or development galas.

For each gala, a notice is put on the club notice board at Dreghorn Barracks listing the swimmers and which swims they are eligible to enter. The decision as to which swimmers should be entered for a gala is down to the Head Coach. On the odd occasion, a swimmer may have been overlooked or the Head Coach may have a valid reason for not selecting a swimmer for the meet. If your child hasn't been selected to enter the meet and you'd like them entered, please speak to the Head Coach to resolve matters. Also on this notice board you will find the name, date, and location of the Gala; the entry fee (per swim), and the warm up times for each session. Age is normally calculated as age on day (of the gala) or sometimes age at end of year 31st December. There will also be a closing date detailed.

If you wish to enter the Gala, you must see Janette Lee who will take your gala entries. Janette will have an entry sheet on which swims not required can be crossed out. To enter for a gala Dunedin Swim Team has to pay the club holding the gala for each of the intended swims up front and we therefore require payment before your child can be entered for the gala. If payment is not received by the closing date then the entry will not be submitted. Please do not leave gala entries to the very last minute as this creates a mountain of work for the Gala and Entry Secretary.

Once notification has been received of accepted swims these will be posted on the notice board. If there are any swims which your child has not been accepted then please see Janette Lee for a refund (these will not actually be listed on the board so it is a good idea to keep a note yourself of which swims you have entered and paid for). Reserve swims must be paid for if they are offered on the day of the gala even if you decide to withdraw from these. If they are not offered on the day then you will receive a refund.
